Shaidaan comes from the languages Arabic and Hausa. (Arabic: شَيْطٰان English: Devil or Satan.) Shaidaan is considered to be the evil spirit in Arabic and African culture. Shaidaan incites humans to sin by whispering to the heart (قَلْب qalb) via waswasaħ (وَسْوَسَة, “whispering”). Shaidaan is considered to be evil and often described as ugly or hell-fire like creature.

Shaidaan is said to possess people, and the possession can be really tough to get rid of. The word Shaidaan literally translates to "The devil". Shaidaan is often compared to Iblis, since they're both mentioned in the Quran. It's commonly believed that saying bismillah, reciting a certain du'a (prayer), can ward off the attacks of the Shaidaan on people. It's also said in the Quran that Shaidaan was the one practicing witchcraft.
